One of the main things I knew I wanted to do in the master bedroom renovation was an accent wall with an art ledge. But I also knew I didn’t just want a wall with one color but something different as the finishing touch.

ACCENT WALL:
When I saw this picture on Pinterest of a wallpaper print I knew that was what I wanted on my wall and it gave me a reason to use up some of the left over wood from the laundry room renovation. That’s a win win in my book.
And on top of that I am going to place some of our art on the ledge. So lets get this thing started people.
I already knew I was going to use Sherwin Williams color in Roycroft Bronze Green as the background for the wall as well as the ceiling here and left the wood in its natural color. Taping off how high I wanted it to be (which fell about my eye level (I’m 5’10) I painted the wall and started laying out how I wanted the wood pieces to be placed on the wall. I also numbered the underside of the pieces so I wouldn’t get confused with what went where. I don’t know about y’all but I will start doing to much and get it confused…lol.
Keeping the picture in mind I started placing the wood (which were 1 1/2″ wide pieces) onto the wall and nailing it in place with some finishing nails and liquid nail. It sort of reminded me of Tetris. As I put the pieces up I made sure that I spaced them about the width of my level (2 1/4″) as you can see here in the picture. I felt it gave the perfect look for what I had in mind.
When I had about 10 pieces up I stepped back looking to see if what I was picturing was actually happening on the wall. It was (enter Cheshire Cat smile here) I know accent walls aren’t for everyone but I think if you make it fit your style it really makes a room. It also didn’t take that long to complete you can knock this out in a day if you wanted to.
ART LEDGE:
Now the art ledge was going to be a whole other thing. I will admit that once it was finished I wish it was a little wider but hey that’s how it is. Using yep you guessed it some of the leftover wood again and I created what looks like a small “L” shape with it because I didn’t think it would be that great if art fell on our heads while we are sleeping….
Using these 4 L-shaped brackets (the size depends on the width of your shelf) screwing them into the studs which usually falls about 16 inches apart made it secure for the art I was wanting to place on it. Remember you want the shelf to be able to hold the amount of weight you plan on putting on it. Make sure and see if it bows under the weight before you place everything and just walk away.
With my favorite pieces of art ready to go I began:
When you begin styling your ledge place your gorgeous art as your main focal points. But make sure they aren’t right on top of each other. Space them a little apart as a friend would say you want them to hug not kiss. Since the picture on the right had some weight to it I secured it with a small hook to the wall like this:
I also included a pic from one of our family vacations and a small mirror to bounce light around the room (not as if the room needed more light; really I just wanted to use the mirror).
Now that I had some of the main pieces I still had to fill in the little spaces in between. That means plaannnnntttttssssss (little happy dance inserted here).
When I planned this I knew I wouldn’t have to many pieces of art since the accent wall is an art piece in its self and I didn’t want it to look to busy in the over all look.
With this complete it really tied the room together. I guess you could say it was the chefs kiss for this room. This is my first ledge and I must say it turned out beautifully.
