Why Choose Cedar for your Potting Bench?

We know…We know…Cedar is more expensive but trust us it’s worth it. Cedar is a popular choice for outdoor furniture and structures, such as fences and decks, for several reasons. First, it’s naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insects, making it a durable and long lasting material for your potting table. Second, it has a beautiful, natural color (it still looks beautiful when it’s wet) and grain pattern that adds warmth and charm to any outdoor space. And third, it’s lightweight and easy to work with, making it an ideal choice for a DIY project like this.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • 2x4x8 cedar lumber (8, 2 for height, 4 for length, 2 for depth)
  • 2x6x8 cedar lumber (6, split into 18″ slats)
  • Circular saw
  • Drill/driver
  • Screws (2″and 3″)
  • Measuring tape
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Pencil
  • Level

Building Your Cedar Potting Bench

  1. Cut your lumber to size. Cut two of the 2x4x8 cedar boards to 3 feet in length for the legs, four to 8 feet for the length, and two to 2 feet for the depth. Then, cut the six 2x6x8 cedar boards into three equal pieces each to create the slats for the shelves.
  2. Assemble the frame. Use the 3″ screws to attach the legs to the length pieces, creating a rectangular frame. Use the carpenter’s square to ensure that the corners are at right angles.
  3. Lay the 2′ pieces across the top shelf, lining up the bottom edge with the bottom of the 8′ length pieces. Use the 2″ screws to attach on each end.
  4. Lay slats across said pieces (slats should be flush with the frame pieces when laid on top of 2′ pieces).
  5. Use the 2″ screws to attach slats on each end, spacing them evenly apart as you go. Use level to ensure that they are flush with the frame pieces.
  6. Repeat for the bottom shelf. Attach the slats to the bottom shelf in the same manner as the top shelf.
  7. Cut out the repotting space. Flip (whatever you are going to use as your repotting pan) your repotting pan over onto the top shelf and outline it with a pencil. Then, use your circular saw to cut along the line.
  8. Sand and finish. Sand any rough edges or surfaces with a fine grit sandpaper. Then, apply a coat of waterproof sealant to protect the wood from moisture and prolong its lifespan.

Why you Need a Potting Bench

A potting bench is an essential tool for any gardener, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced green thumb. Here are some reasons why:

  • Provides a convenient workspace for all your gardening projects, from repotting plants to starting seeds.
  • Keeps your gardening tools organized and within easy reach, saving you time and effort.
  • Protects your back and knees by elevating your work surface to a comfortable height.
  • Adds charm and functionality to your outdoor space, whether it’s a backyard garden or a greenhouse.
  • One thing we love is using the bottom shelf for our chicken feed and extra pots and such.

Not only that, but building your own potting bench can be a fun and rewarding DIY project. Now don’t get us wrong it was hot and you will get cranky with each other but it wouldn’t be a DIY project if these things weren’t involved….or is that just us? But you’ll get to create a custom piece that fits your needs and personal style, and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you built it yourself.
