An arched trellis over a garden entrance just says enchanting to me. Every time you see those beautiful overflowing wildflower gardens there’s always an arched trellis over the entrance. So of course I wanted to create one over our entrance! Now they’re very easy to create and I thought I would share with you how you could make one yourself and all you need is some PVC pipe, chicken wire, and some rebar.
Supplies you’ll need:
- PVC pipe (enough to create the arch size you want and the braces)
- Rebar (for stability)
- Chicken wire (to cover the arch)
- Three sided plugs (one for every brace)
- Zip ties or wire clips (optional)
- Tape measure
- Saw or PVC cutter
- Marker
Measure and Plan
First things first, imagine your beautiful arched trellis in front of you. What is the width and length of it? You can do it as wide and high as you want that’s the joy of creating your own, with ours we measured the arch to be about 2 feet wide, with the ends buried 2 feet into the ground for stability. When you plan your length/height of your arch base it on how dramatic you want it to look- around 6-8 feet is a good range. I mean come on let’s make it a show stopper right?!?!
Cut and Bend
Now that you have decided on how it will look let’s to cutting. Cut your PVC pipe to the desired length, allowing extra for the parts that will go into the ground. You will also cut (6) 2.0 foot long pieces for the braces that will connect the two pieces of the PVC pipes. To create the arch, bend the pipe into a U-shape. If you find it difficult to bend, try heating the pipe slightly to make it more pliable. Ensure both sides are symmetrical.
Attach Braces
To add more stability, you will attach braces running between both pieces of the PVC pipes. Begin measuring and marking a little over every 3 feet along the two PVC pipes that form the arch. Using a handsaw or PVC cutters cut at each mark, creating segments for inserting three-sided plugs. Insert the PVC cuttings into the ends of the three sided plug, ensuring a snug fit. The plugs have three holes: two for the long pieces and one for the brace that will connect them. Insert the braces–shorter pieces of PVC–into the third hole, creating cross-braces that now have connected the long pieces together.
This design reinforces the arch’s structure without significantly reducing its height. Since the rebar and chicken wire will further stabilize the trellis, you don’t need to glue the plugs, allowing for flexibility and adjustments. Double check the stability of the entire structure, ensuring all braces and plugs are secure. This added reinforcement will ensure your arched trellis can support climbing plants and endure the elements.
Install the Rebar
To keep your trellis secure, drive rebar into the ground where each end of the PVC pipe will go. Aim for about 2 feet deep to ensure it holds up against wind and plant weight. Once the rebar is in place, slide the PVC pipe over each rebar post. This will serve as the framework for your arched trellis.
Attaching Chicken WireWith your arch structure in place, roll out the chicken wire across the entire length of the arch. Let the wire overlap the sides, so you can bend it around the PVC pipe and create a hooked clasp from the ends of the cut wire. This will secure the chicken wire to the PVC pipe (You can use zip ties or wire clips to fasten the wire in place as well if you wish). Make sure it’s tight and secure to prevent sagging.
Let’s Plant
Now that your arched trellis is complete, it’s time to add some greenery! Plant your favorite climbing plants at the base of each side of the trellis. As they grow, train them climb up and over the arch. Not only will this create a beautiful entrance to your garden, but it will also provide shade and a lovely aroma as your plants bloom.
Conclusion
Building an arched trellis over your garden entrance is a rewarding DIY project that can add both style and function to your outdoor space. With a bit of planning and some basic materials like PVC pipe, chicken wire, and rebar, you can create a stunning garden feature that will be the envy of your neighbors and it’s dreamy.
