DIY Pinboards: Easy, Unique, and Just Your Style

Do you have a pinboard in your office? I mean, come on, it’s a must have right? But let’s be honest, finding a pinboard that matches your style can be a challenge. I went on a quest for the perfect pinboard during our office renovation, and let’s just say I wasn’t moved with the options out there. So, like any DIYer, I turned to Pinterest for inspiration. After diving down the rabbit hole, I came across a couple of designs that caught my eye and decided to put my own twist on them. The result? Unique, easy-to-make pinboards that are also functional.

Now, before we get started on this project, let’s get some things together.

You’ll need:

  • Cork Board
  • Spray Glue
  • 1/8 inch Project Panel
  • 1/2 inch Grommets
  • 2 inch Screws
  • Fabric
  • Box cutter
  • Pencil
  • Staple Gun
  • Hammer
  • Drill w/ Bit
  • 1/2 inch Copper Coupling

ASSEMBLING:

First things first, pick the spot in your office where you want your pinboards to be. Then, get creative with the shape you want them to be. With our pinboards I knew that I didn’t want an entire wall so I designed them to have unique shape, making them a statement along side the art work I put up in here with them. I decided to go with a stair-stepping design for ours but whatever shape you choose, the steps remain the same, so let’s get started. (Pictures of each step is below)

STEP 1: Cut and Sand

Cut your backing and cork creating it to match the pinboard’s unique shape you have chosen, and don’t forget to smooth the rough edges of your backing with a little sandpaper.

STEP 2: Mark and Notch

Now let’s work on the corners for a moment. Measure 1 inch in on each corner of your shape and mark it with a pencil. Next, make a little notch where you marked, just deep enough to feel it through the fabric you’ll be using. But hold on now; don’t drill the holes just yet. That will come later.

STEP 3: Stick and smooth

It’s time for fabric. Spray some glue on the cork board and lay your chosen fabric on top, smoothing it all down except for the corners. We’ve a couple things we need to do first with them.

STEP 4: hole in one

Drill it out….some. With those corners peeled back just enough to expose the notches, drill the holes only through the corking for your grommets. (your backing won’t have the same size holes that your grommets need) Make sure you make the holes just a little smaller than the opening of the grommet otherwise they won’t stay in (trust me…..). You will then smooth the fabric flat over the holes.

STEP 5: grommet

Taking a razor blade, cut a small “X” over the drilled hole. Now, pop the grommet in there, and using your hammer, knock it into place. It will leave an opening all the way to where you will be able to see the backing board. Repeat with all.

STEP 6: attach and stick

Flipping the entire piece over (careful now, the cork’s not stuck to the board yet), peel the sticky backing off the cork, and press it down onto the backing until secure.

STEP 7: Staple it up

Pulling the fabric over the edges snug start stapling it down to the backing. Tighten it up but don’t go overboard; we’re not aiming for a fabric trampoline here. Overlap the corners and cut off the excess fabric you may have.

STEP 8: Wall-mounting

Pause for just a moment here! Here is where you will drill some pilot holes into the backing before you bring it inside, so you’re all set to attach it easily. Once you start screwing them into the wall, as the screw comes through the backing place your copper coupling over it, then continue on until the coupling is snug against the wall (not in the wall). Repeat on all corners.

Now stand back and admire your masterpiece!

This is an easy project that anyone can do in a day. It also gives you a unique piece for your workspace, as well as it is a huge help in keeping paperwork at the tips of our fingers instead of having to dig around for them.
